Debriefing

InToMission Debriefing

'Give yourself time to pause.'

Your story deserves to be heard

A mission assignment changes you. You carry beautiful memories and valuable experiences with you, but sometimes also losses, disappointments, stress or deeply impactful events. Not everything you experience automatically finds its place along the way. A debriefing gives you the space to intentionally reflect on what you have been through. Together with an experienced debriefer, you put your story into words, helping you process your experiences and move forward with new insights and confidence.

What is debriefing?

Taking time to reflect on what you have experienced during a particular period of your life.
Debriefing is an intentional process of looking back and reflecting on a particular period in your life. During a debriefing, you are given the time and space to share your story. Together with an experienced debriefer, you reflect on events, changes and experiences that have been significant to you. There is space for what was positive and meaningful, as well as for losses, disappointments and difficult experiences. You don’t have to solve or bring everything to a conclusion. It is about allowing your story to be heard and taking time to reflect on what you have been through.

What can debriefing offer you?

Giving your story space helps you move forward.
Looking back can help you understand more clearly how a particular period in your life has affected you. You discover what has shaped you, which experiences may still need attention, and which lessons and meaningful memories you want to carry with you. There is also space to reflect on losses, changes, and God’s presence and guidance in your story. Debriefing can help you process your experiences, recognise patterns and discover new perspectives. This can bring greater peace and clarity, helping you make more intentional choices about what to let go of, what to carry forward, and what you need for the next season of your life.

Why InToMission

Good debriefing requires expertise and an understanding of missionary life.
Debriefing requires a safe environment and an understanding of missionary and crosscultural life. Our professionally trained debriefers have extensive experience in supporting missionary workers and their families. Drawing on many years of practical experience and international expertise, InToMission has developed its own ITM Debriefing Model. It brings together professional guidance, intercultural sensitivity, creative approaches and a Christian perspective on loss, grief, healing, recovery and growth. This creates space for your whole story and for what you need to move forward with confidence.

Our debriefing programmes

A debriefing tailored to your story and situation.
No mission assignment, experience or life story is the same. That is why InToMission offers different forms of debriefing for individuals, couples, families and young people. Each programme is tailored to your situation, the season you are in and what you need at this point in your journey. Debriefing can be valuable during home leave, after returning to your home country, after an intense or difficult period, or when you notice that certain experiences still need attention. You don’t have to wait until you feel stuck; intentionally taking time to reflect along the way can help you process your experiences and move forward in a healthy way. Together, we consider which programme best fits what you have experienced, where you are now and what you need for the next season.

Our debriefers

A safe space begins with someone who truly listens to you.
Debriefing is personal. You may share experiences that are meaningful and positive, but also experiences that are vulnerable, painful or complex. That is why we believe it is important for you to feel seen, heard and safe with the person you share your story with. Our professionally trained debriefers have extensive experience supporting mission and crosscultural workers and their families. They understand the dynamics of living between cultures, transitions, losses, relationships and faith. They listen without judgement, ask thoughtful questions and help you put into words what you have experienced. With care, expertise and intercultural sensitivity, they walk alongside you for part of your journey, keeping your story and what you need at the centre.
